Public debate – preventing conflicts of interest for EU officials

The Commission’s plans to tighten ethics rules for (ex-)Commissioners are under
scrutiny. In response to the growing public interest in this issue, the Alliance for
Lobbying Transparency and Ethics Regulation (ALTER-EU), with the support of
Journalists at Your Service (J@ys), are organising a public debate to discuss the issue.

When: Thursday, February 3, 2011 – 09.30 am
Where: International Press Center/Residence Palace, Brussels, 200 rue de la Loi – Maelbeek Room
Who: Opening remarks: Ingeborg Graessle, MEP (EPP, Germany).

The debate follows the recent scandals of former Commissioners moving to private jobs immediately at the end of their mandate and the related discussions about ethics in EU administration. It will focus on the reform of the current code of conduct for EU Commissioners, which is to be discussed between President Barroso and the Conference of Presidents of the Parliament later in February 2011.

Participants in debate

  • Lothar Bisky, MEP (President of GUE/NGL, Germany)
  • Nessa Childers, MEP (S&D, Ireland)
  • Monica Macovei, MEP (EPP, Romania)
  • Paul Flynn, MP (Labour, Newport West, United Kingdom)
  • Paul de Clerck, representative of ALTER-EU
  • Moderator: Hajo Friedrich, EU journalist
